History of the St. George Lighthouse

The St. George Island Lighthouse, built-in 1833, has been reconstructed several times, including in 1848 and 1852. Eventually, beach erosion took down the original lighthouse, and The St. George Lighthouse Association took on the effort to salvage whatever pieces they could find. The original plans were obtained, allowing the lighthouse to be reconstructed with many of the original materials. In October of 2005, the lighthouse again fell into the Gulf of Mexico, so in 2008, the lighthouse was again reconstructed and open to the public.
