Where Is St. George Island?
First things first: where is St. George Island? This vacation spot is located along the “Forgotten Coast” of the Florida Panhandle. Even though it’s a pretty small island, it’s still easy to find no matter where you’re driving in from. For reference, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach St. George Island from Tallahassee or Panama City Beach. You can also get to St. George Island in about 4.5 hours from Montgomery and about 5 hours from Atlanta.
If you’re driving in from Tallahassee, the easiest way to reach St. George Island is to take US-319 South, or “the Scenic Byway.” It’s a straight shot down this road for about 70 miles, making it an easy day trip or weekend getaway.
From Panama City Beach, the easiest way to get here is by taking US-98 East. As you follow this road, you’ll eventually make your way to the Scenic Byway to come onto the island. The whole trip takes just under 2 hours.
If you’re coming from Montgomery, you’ll want to take US-231 South. You’ll then make your way to I-10 East toward Tallahassee, taking Exit 152 to get to FL-69 South. After about 20 miles, you’ll get on FL-20 East, which you’ll follow for about 55 miles to get to the Scenic Byway.
Finally, you’ll start on I-85 South for about 55 miles from Atlanta until you get on I-185 South. Follow this road for about 48 miles, then get on US-27 South. You’ll then get on GA-97 and come into Florida via County Highway 379. Once you make your way to FL-65 South, you’ll then use the Scenic Byway to get to St. George Island.
