About St. George Island 

 

St. George Island is centrally located along the Florida Panhandle’s “Forgotten Coast”. The island itself is small but mighty, at 28 miles in length and only 1 mile at its widest point. 

 

Known for its famous lighthouse, St. George is also home to the St. George Island State Park, quaint beach shops and art galleries, and several charming local restaurants

 

For reference, St George Island is 1.5 hours from Panama City, 1.5 hours from Tallahassee, and 5 hours from Tampa, which makes day-trips a popular activity for visitors. 

 

Drive to St. George Island from Atlanta

Miles: 330 | Drive Time: 5+ Hours

 

The drive to St. George Island from Atlanta is fairly straightforward and should take just over five hours, pending any traffic or pit stops. 

 

There are three main options for your venture south. US-27 South is the most direct route and will put you in SGI in under 5 and a half hours. I-75 South takes you Macon, GA and will bump the trip time up to 5 and a half hours. FL-65 S routes west of Columbus and pushes the drive time to 5 hours 45 minutes. 

 

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most direct route from Atlanta to St. George Island: 

 

  • Get on I-75 S/I-85 S from Memorial Dr SE, Washington St SW and Pulliam St SW
  • Follow I-85 S, I-185 S and US-27 S to GA-97/Faceville Hwy in Bainbridge. Take the GA-97/Faceville Hwy exit from US-27 S
  • Continue on GA-97/Faceville Hwy to Gadsden County
  • Turn left onto US-90 E
  • Follow FL-65 S to US-319 S/US-98 W in Franklin County
  • Turn right onto US-319 S/US-98 W
  • Continue on Big Bend Scenic Byway Coastal Trail. Drive to W Bay Shore Dr

 

Drive to St. George Island from Tallahassee

Miles: 75 | Drive Time: 1.5 Hours

 

The drive from Tallahassee to St. George Island is a breeze. Depending on traffic, the drive usually takes right at an hour and a half, and the drive on the Big Bend Scenic Byway truly lives up to its name! 

 

As noted above, US-319 South (the “Scenic Byway”) is the most direct route from Tallahassee to SGI. You can route through Woodville via FL-363 and add another 10-15 minutes onto the trip or take the extended scenic route via FL-20 W to FL-65 S and add 15-20 minutes to your drive time. 

 

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most direct route from Tallahassee to St. George Island: 

  • Take US-319 S to Big Bend Scenic Byway Coastal Trail/Patton Dr in Franklin County
  • Continue on Big Bend Scenic Byway Coastal Trail. Drive to W Bay Shore Dr

 

Tallahassee to Saint George is literally a straight shot via the Scenic Byway and is our preferred route for the easy 1.5 hour drive. 

 

As a note, Tallahassee is the closest major airport to St. George Island. If you are flying in from a different destination, you’ll likely need to rent a car and drive to Saint George from the airport. But don’t fret—the drive is a breeze! 

 

Drive to St. George Island from Montgomery

Miles: 245 | Drive Time: 4.5 Hours

 

The drive from Montgomery to St. George Island clocks in at right around 4.5 hours, pending weather and traffic. You’ll head southeast through Alabama before shifting south to head towards the island. 

 

To make it to Saint George at the 4.5 hour mark, we recommend taking US-231 South as the most direct route. Alternatively, you can take US-331 South, which routes farther south before heading east, or take US-231 to FL-65 for a slightly farther east route, both of which will add about 15-20 minutes to the travel time.

 

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most direct route from Montgomery to St. George Island:

  • Get on I-85 N from S Decatur St
  • Take US-231 S and I-10 E to FL-69 S in Jackson County. Take exit 152 from I-10 E
  • Continue on FL-69 S to Blountstown
  • Turn left onto FL-20 E
  • Follow Co Rd 12 and FL-65 S to US-319 S/US-98 W in Franklin County
  • Turn right onto US-319 S/US-98 W
  • Continue on Big Bend Scenic Byway Coastal Trail. Drive to W Bay Shore Dr

 

Tips for Driving to St. George Island

 

  • Check your car prior to leaving for the trip: tune up (if necessary), check oil and filters, check battery, check the spare tire, and fill up the tank. And, always have emergency essentials on hand, like jumper cables and a tire patch kit. 
  • Consider joining AAA for emergency roadside services. 
  • Download Waze or another traffic app to get real-time updates on road conditions, traffic conditions, etc.
