St. George Island Golf Cart Rules and FAQs

Are you a first-time renter or unsure about the island regulations? Here are a few FAQs and general rules about renting a golf cart on St. George Island.

Are there any restrictions for driving a golf cart on St. George Island?

Yes! There are restrictions for where golf carts are allowed on the island and what times golf carts can be driven.

Golf carts are not allowed on Gulf Beach Drive and Franklin Boulevard. Golf carts are permitted to cross these roads but are not allowed to drive on the road or on the bike path. If your rental is past 11th Street on the East end of the island you will not be allowed to drive your cart home. We recommend checking your rental address prior to reserving your golf cart.

Additionally, driving a golf cart is only permitted sunrise to sunset. The only exception to this rule is if the golf cart is equipped with headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and a windshield—most standard golf cart rentals on the island do not meet this criteria, so stick to daylight hours for your golf cart adventures.

Is there an age limit for renting and driving a golf cart?

Yes, you must possess a valid driver’s license to drive a golf cart on St. George Island. Additionally, some rental agencies require the driver to be at least 25 years of age. There is no age limit to be a golf cart passenger.

How fast do golf carts go?

By law, golf carts can go no more than 20 miles per hour. During your cruises, you’ll likely average around 15 miles per hour.

How much does it cost to rent a golf cart?

The cost to rent a golf cart on St. George will vary based on the size of the cart and length of the rental. In general, expect to pay around $35-$45 an hour for short rentals, $100-$150 per day for daily rentals, and $550-$750 for weekly rentals.

Are golf carts subject to local driving regulations?

Yes. Golf carts on St. George Island must obey all local and state traffic laws, and a golf cart driver may be charged or ticketed in the same manner as a motor vehicle operator.
